Get Moving with the Alphabet

This afternoon I came across this great post over at Watch Me Learn and Play.  Alphabet Exercise  is a great way to get your kids moving and working on their letters.  My 4 year old daughter is in preschool and I’m always looking for new ways to get her excited about learning.

Allie and I got out some index cards and colored sharpie markers and went to town.  On each card I wrote the upper case and lower case letter of the alphabet along with an action that went along with the letter.  Allie had a bunch of fun trying to come up with things to do for each letter.  She really wanted to make elephant sounds for every letter, but I talked her into saving that one for the letter e card.

After we made our cards we shuffled them up really good.  Then, she picked a card and I had her trace her finger over the letter and identify it.  If she needed help I gave her a hint.  Once she knew the letter, I read the action to her and she performed it.  She had a bunch of fun working on her letters and got to move around and be silly at the same time.  We’ll definitely be using this game for awhile to practice her letters.  There is space on the back of the cards for us to add more actions if we need more ideas too.

Here is a list of all the actions we made for our alphabet cards.

A – Act like an animal

B – Buzz like a bee

C- Clap your hands

D – Dance around

E – Make Elephant sounds

F – Fishy Face

G – Giggle

H – Hug someone

I – Itch all over

J – Jump up and down

K – Kick the air

L – Look all around

M – Make a funny face

N – Nod your head

O – Open your mouth

P – Pucker up

Q – Quack like a duck

R – Run in place

S – “Sss” like a snake

T – Touch your nose

U – Go under the table

V = View something

W – Walk in a circle

X – Exercise

Y -Yawn

Z – Zip a zipper

I’d love to see any cards you make with your kids, and hear about the actions they decide upon for each letter of the alphabet.

My daughter loved this too. I was thinking of keeping the cards I’ve made and pull them out now and again. Also, see what other ideas they can come up with.

I’ll definitely be reusing our cards again. I’m thinking of adding a texture element to the letters for when she traces the letters with her fingers. Maybe I could use some glitter or sand to have to give the letters bumpy texture.
